Tools that make writing Chinese a daily habit.
Hanzi Studio builds simple, fast, printable tools for anyone learning to write Chinese — students, self-learners, teachers and parents.
Why this site exists
Learning to write Chinese is not really about talent. It is about repetitions — the right repetitions, on paper, in the right order. Most learners quit not because the characters are too hard but because the material is awkward: textbook worksheets are crammed, photocopies are grey, and building your own practice sheet takes longer than the practice itself.
Hanzi Studio removes that friction. Type the characters you are actually studying, pick a grid, and print a clean sheet in a few seconds. No signup, no watermark, no page limit.
How it works
Every character on this site is drawn from vector data rather than a font file. That has a practical benefit: the character you see on screen is exactly the character that comes out of your printer, at any size, on any device — and the stroke-order breakdown and the model character always agree with each other.
Worksheets are assembled entirely inside your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or analysed, and the page works even with a slow connection once the character data is cached.
Where the data comes from
Stroke shapes and stroke medians come from the Make Me a Hanzi project, derived from Arphic's open-source fonts and released under the LGPL / Arphic Public Licence. English glosses and pinyin come from the same project. Frequency ordering is derived from the open HSK vocabulary lists. We are grateful to the maintainers of these projects.
How the site is funded
The tools are free and always will be. The site is paid for by clearly-labelled advertising and by voluntary contributions from readers. Anyone who chips in $1.99 receives the five-book printable library — 239 pages in all — straight away as a thank-you; supporting the project is the most direct way to keep it running.
