Terms of Service & Digital Product Licence
Last updated: 13 October 2026 · Version 1.0 · Applies to www.hzistudio.com and all files distributed from it
The short version
- The free tools are genuinely free, and you are welcome to use them and print for yourself, your family or your own students.
- A contribution is voluntary and supports the site. Our five printable books — 239 pages in all — are delivered instantly as a thank-you gift, not as physical products.
- You may print the books as often as you like for your own use. You may not resell them, share the files, or upload them anywhere.
- Because the download is delivered instantly, all contributions are final and non-refundable — except where the law does not allow that, or where the file itself is broken and we cannot fix it.
1. Who we are and what these terms cover
These terms are a legal agreement between you and Hanzi Studio ("we", "us"), the operator of www.hzistudio.com, covering your use of this website, the free tools on it, and any digital files you receive from us, including the five printable books described in section 3 (together, "the Library"). By using the site you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal data and forms part of these terms.
2. The free tools
The worksheet generator and the stroke-order tool are provided free of charge for personal, educational and classroom use. You may generate and print as many worksheets as you like with them. We may change, suspend, limit or withdraw any feature at any time, and we do not guarantee that the site will be available without interruption or free of errors. Please keep your own copies of anything you need, because we do not archive your worksheets.
3. Voluntary contributions and thank-you gifts
The site is funded by clearly-labelled advertising and by voluntary contributions from users. A contribution is a voluntary payment in support of the project. It is not the purchase of a physical product, it does not create an order for goods to be manufactured or shipped, and it does not give you any ownership interest in the site or in our content.
As a thank-you for a contribution, we make the following five printable books available to you immediately as digital downloads, together with anything else described on the library page. Together they are referred to in these terms as the Library:
- The 500 Character Workbook — 120 pages, supplied in both a US Letter and an A4 edition;
- Ready-Made Practice Sets (米字格) — 44 pages;
- Blank Mi Zi Ge Sheets (米字格) — 20 pages;
- Blank Tian Zi Ge Sheets (田字格) — 20 pages;
- Classic Poems — 35 pages.
What is delivered is the set of five books described on the library page on the date you contribute; we may add, replace or retire individual books, grids and page counts in future editions. Delivery is electronic only: the download link is shown at the end of the payment process and is also sent to the email address you provide. There is nothing to ship and no shipping charges.
Because the gift is delivered at the moment your contribution is completed, you are not entitled to receive anything further from us, and the obligations described in sections 5 and 6 below (delivery and support) are the full extent of our commitments. Every book is a digital file: none of them is a physical item, and no printed copy is supplied.
4. Licence to use the Library (what you may and may not do)
You may:
- download and keep any file in the Library for your own use;
- print the Library, or any pages from it, as many times as you like for yourself, for members of your own household, and for students you personally teach;
- use the pages in your own lessons, including one-to-one tutoring and your own classroom;
- store your own private backup copy of the file.
You may not:
- resell, rent, lend, sublicense or otherwise commercially exploit the Library or any part of it;
- share, publish, upload, torrent or distribute any file in the Library, or a link to it, to any public or file-sharing service, group chat, forum, marketplace or cloud folder open to others;
- print copies for sale, or print copies to distribute to a school, department, company or organisation beyond the personal and own-teaching uses allowed above;
- use the Library, or any pages from it, as part of another product or service that you sell or give away;
- claim authorship of the Library, remove or obscure copyright notices, or present it as your own work;
- mass-extract the character data, glyph outlines, page layouts or design from our files for use in a competing product.
Where the printed pages contain character glyph outlines derived from open-source projects, those underlying glyph data remain available under their own open licences (see section 10). This licence restricts our Library as a whole — our selection, sequencing, layout, design and compilation — and does not take away any right that those third-party licences grant you independently.
A licence is granted to the individual making the contribution and is personal. Transferring your file to another person is both a breach of these terms and the end of your licence. If you would like a licence for a school, company or institution, contact us about a site licence.
5. Delivery and technical requirements
The books are supplied as PDF downloads: the workbook in both US Letter and A4 editions, and the three booklet files laid out to print correctly on either US Letter or A4 paper. You need a PDF reader and, if you wish to print, a printer or a print service. Results depend on your own equipment: we do not control your printer, paper, ink or print settings and cannot guarantee a particular print result. If your download link does not work, if the file is corrupted, or if you did not receive the email, email hanzipracticestudio@gmail.com with your order reference and we will re-send the file or help you get it working.
6. Final sale: no refunds or returns for digital downloads
All contributions are final and non-refundable, and no returns or exchanges are possible. This is because the Library is a set of digital files delivered immediately and completely at the moment your contribution is processed, and they cannot be returned, recalled, unsent or "restocked" once they have been received.
- By completing a contribution you request immediate delivery of the thank-you gift, and you acknowledge and agree that you lose any right to cancel or withdraw from the transaction once the download has been made available.
- Visitors in the European Union and the United Kingdom: this reflects Article 16(m) of the Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU (and the equivalent UK provision), under which the right of withdrawal is lost for digital content supplied immediately with the consumer's prior express consent and acknowledgement. The checkout asks you to confirm that consent before payment.
- Please check the free tools on this site first, and read the description on the library page — what each of the five books contains and how many pages it runs to — before contributing. If you are unsure whether the Library suits you, contact us with your questions before you contribute and we will answer honestly.
- Nothing in this section removes or limits any right you have that cannot legally be waived, including your statutory rights as a consumer under the law that applies to you, or your right to a remedy where a digital product is faulty or not as described.
- If the file is genuinely faulty, corrupted or materially different from its description, we will fix it, re-send it or, at our discretion where a fix is not possible, refund the contribution. This is the only circumstance in which a contribution is returned, and it does not apply to a change of mind, to a decision not to use the file, to printing problems caused by your own equipment, or to a misunderstanding of what a digital download is.
Chargebacks and payment disputes: please contact us before involving your bank or payment provider. We keep records of every delivery, we can show when a download link was issued and accessed, and we will cooperate fully with any legitimate dispute. Filing a chargeback for a file that was delivered is a breach of these terms: we may revoke your licence, block further contributions and provide the delivery evidence to the payment provider and, where relevant, to fraud-prevention services.
7. Acceptable use of the site
You agree not to misuse the site. In particular, you must not attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of it, use automated means to copy or bulk-download the site or its data in a way that degrades the service for others, interfere with or manipulate the advertising on the site (including clicking your own ads or inducing others to do so), use the site for anything unlawful, or use our name or branding in a way that suggests endorsement or partnership. We may suspend or block access where we reasonably believe these terms are being breached.
8. Advertising
This site displays advertising to keep the tools free. Advertisements are supplied by third-party networks and are chosen by them, not by us. Advertising slots are always labelled. We do not endorse the products or services advertised, and any dealings you have with an advertiser are solely between you and that advertiser.
9. Intellectual property
The website, its code, its design, and the selection, sequencing, layout and compilation of the Library are our intellectual property and are protected by copyright, except for the third-party materials credited below and except where material is offered under an open licence. No rights are granted to you other than the licence set out in section 4.
10. Third-party credits and open licences
- Character stroke and glyph data: Make Me a Hanzi, derived from fonts released under the Arphic Public License.
- Pinyin readings and English definitions: the Unicode Unihan database, © Unicode, Inc., used under the Unicode License.
- Typefaces embedded in the books and on this site: Noto Serif and Noto Sans, © Google LLC, licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
- Frequency ranking computed from open datasets: wordfreq, Tatoeba (CC BY 2.0) and HSK 3.0 vocabulary frequencies.
These materials remain subject to their own licences; nothing in these terms restricts the rights those licences grant you.
11. Disclaimer of warranties
The site and all files are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that the content is error-free or complete, that the character data or definitions are accurate in every respect, or that the files will work on every device, printer or PDF reader. Educational material is provided for general learning purposes and is not professional, linguistic or legal advice.
12. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill or anticipated savings, arising out of or in connection with your use of the site or the files, however caused. Our total aggregate liability in relation to any contribution you make is limited to the amount you actually contributed for the file concerned. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
13. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless against any claims, losses, liabilities and reasonable costs arising from your breach of these terms, including any unauthorised redistribution or resale of the Library and any misuse of the site.
14. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time, for example to reflect changes in the law or new features. The version at the top of this page shows when they last changed, and material changes will be noted on this page. The terms in force at the time of your contribution govern that contribution. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
15. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the operator of this site is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and the courts of that jurisdiction have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute — except that a consumer resident elsewhere may also bring proceedings in the courts of their own country of residence where local consumer law gives them that right. Before starting formal proceedings, please contact hanzipracticestudio@gmail.com and give us 30 days to resolve the matter informally. Nothing in this section prevents either party from using a recognised alternative dispute resolution service.
