DIY PRO · Tool 01 · This Week in China

This week's China, not the textbook's.

Every week, two or three things people in China are actually talking about — a street being walked, a museum staying open late, a habit that appeared this year. Each one is written up as a short article in three versions: HSK 1–3, HSK 4–6 and HSK 7–9.

The point is the language you meet here is the language of now — how people really write and speak in the 2020s, not the set phrases and textbook dialogues frozen decades ago. Pick a week, pick a topic, pick your level, and print the whole reading pack.

  • Two or more topics a week — current, ordinary, discussable
  • Three levels per topic — same story, rewritten to fit
  • One pack, eight parts — text, colour, pinyin, characters, questions, answers
How a week reads · 每周怎么读

Same story, three doors in

A topic is not “simplified” by cutting words out — it is rewritten three times, so each version reads naturally at its own level.

HSK 1–3

Just enough能读懂,就敢读下去

Short sentences, high-frequency characters, one idea per paragraph. Around 130 characters — a page you can finish in five minutes and feel good about.

HSK 4–6

Room to reason开始有转折和原因

Two sides of the story, connectors like 一方面…另一方面, numbers and small arguments. Around 240 characters.

HSK 7–9

Written to think with书面语与观点

Editorial register: metaphor, irony, an argument with a counter-argument. Around 320 characters — the way a Chinese opinion column is actually written.
